The recruiting timeline: Grade 8 to signing day

Recruiting runs on one date, one file, and four years of quiet preparation. Here is the whole sequence β€” what you should be doing in every grade, and what coaches are allowed to do and when.

The one date that matters: June 15

In NCAA Division I tennis, coaches may not make recruiting contact β€” calls, texts, emails, DMs β€” until June 15 after your Grade 10 year (sophomore year in the US system). That single date opens the phone lines; verbal offers can follow immediately for players coaches already know about.

MilestoneWhen (D1 tennis)
Recruiting materials, calls, texts, emails from coachesJune 15 after Grade 10
Off-campus, in-person contact with coachesAugust 1 of Grade 11
Official visits (expenses paid by the school)August 1 of Grade 11 β€” max 5 D1 official visits in total
Written athletic-aid offersAugust 1 of Grade 12
NLI signing period (tennis)November β€” November 11, 2026 in the current cycle

Division II is looser: since August 2024, D2 coaches may call, text and email you at any time, with in-person contact and official visits from June 15 after Grade 10. Division III coaches can communicate with you at any point β€” which is why D3 programs often know Indian recruits years before D1 programs do.

The rule nobody tells you: you can always move first

The June 15 rule limits coaches, not you. You can email any coach, fill any questionnaire, and attend any camp from Grade 8 onward. Coaches read everything that arrives, can reply to general (non-recruiting) questions, and keep files. The player whose email a coach has been reading for two years is the player who gets the June 15 phone call. Waiting to be discovered is not a strategy β€” India is very, very far from being discovered by accident.

Grade by grade

GradeOn courtOff court
Grade 8–9 (Class 8–9)Build the game and the work habits. Play local and state AITA events. Start filming matches β€” a phone on a fence post is enough.Grades start counting toward eligibility (core-course GPA from Class 9). Keep every mark sheet. Note your WTN once it exists.
Grade 10 (Class 10)Play national-level events where possible; coaches' first filter is level, the second is trajectory.Register with the NCAA Eligibility Center. Build a 3–5 minute skills video. Draft your email list of 30–60 programs across D1/D2/NAIA/JUCO. First emails go out β€” short, personal, with video link.
Grade 11 (Class 11)The visibility year: national championships, ITF junior events if reachable, UTR/WTN-boosting competitions.June 15 passes β€” phones start ringing for the players coaches know. Official visits from August 1. SAT (digital) taken. Verbal offers and commitments happen here for strong recruits.
Grade 12 (Class 12)Stay healthy, keep improving, keep coaches updated monthly with results β€” classes get re-evaluated late when scholarships open up.Written offers August 1. NLI signing in November. Final transcripts + proof of graduation to the EC. F-1 visa, SEVIS fee, I-20 from your university. Fly out in August.

Visits: official vs unofficial

  • Official visits: the university pays (travel, lodging, meals) β€” allowed from August 1 of Grade 11 in D1, limited to five D1 schools total. Take the ones from schools you'd genuinely consider.
  • Unofficial visits: you pay, allowed anytime β€” campus tours, meeting coaches informally, watching a practice. If a family holiday can pass within two hours of a target school, visit it.
  • What to ask on a visit: how the coach sees you fitting the lineup, what happens to your scholarship if you're injured, how many players they're recruiting in your class, graduation rates. The visit evaluates them as much as you.

Calendar quirks worth knowing

  • Tennis has essentially one dead period (when no in-person recruiting may occur): the November signing week. Otherwise coaches can watch you play year-round.
  • Coaches watch tournaments they can reach β€” for Indian players this means ITF junior events in Asia and any event with published live scores/video matter disproportionately. A coach who can follow your results online can recruit you from 12,000 km away.
  • The late market is real: scholarships reopen every spring when players transfer, sign elsewhere, or get hurt. Unsigned in Grade 12 is uncomfortable, not fatal β€” keep emailing.

  • Personalize the β€œone honest reason” line for every school β€” it's the only part that can't be copy-pasted, and it's the part coaches notice.
  • Update the same coaches monthly during your season: two lines and a result. Silence reads as lack of interest.
  • One coach per program (the head coach or the recruiting coordinator). Track everything in a spreadsheet: school, coach, date sent, reply.

Recruiting calendars change annually β€” confirm dates with the NCAA and each program. Last reviewed: October 2026.
